DZI Volunteers Breathe New Life into a Cultural Landmark in Vratsa

Sometimes, meaningful change leaves a lasting impact not only on people but also on the places that preserve the stories of a community. This was the idea behind a volunteer initiative carried out by DZI employees in Vratsa, where a team of volunteers helped improve the surroundings of the St. Sofroniy Vrachanski Ethnographic and Revival Complex.
The initiative was part of the “Unexpected Goodness” programme, through which employees dedicate their time and energy to projects that benefit local communities across Bulgaria. This time, the focus was on one of the city’s most important cultural spaces, a place that welcomes residents, visitors, students and tourists throughout the year.
During the volunteer action, participants cleaned and refreshed 14 benches located throughout the complex grounds. While the task may seem modest at first glance, its impact is visible immediately to anyone visiting the site. The renovated seating areas contribute to a more welcoming atmosphere and improve the experience of visitors attending the many cultural and educational activities hosted there.
The complex plays an important role in preserving the traditions and history of the Vratsa region. It offers visitors the opportunity to explore traditional crafts, local customs and historical livelihoods that have shaped the identity of the area. Throughout the year, the venue hosts workshops, cultural celebrations, educational programmes and public events that connect new generations with Bulgaria’s rich heritage.
By choosing this location, the volunteers aimed to support a place that not only preserves history but actively keeps it alive. Their efforts will help ensure a more pleasant environment for everyone who visits the complex and participates in its activities.
The initiative also highlighted the power of teamwork. Over the course of a few hours, the volunteers transformed parts of the site, demonstrating how much can be accomplished when people unite around a common cause.
The project in Vratsa is another example of how volunteering can create tangible and lasting change. Sometimes it begins with something as simple as repainting a bench or improving a public space, but these small actions contribute significantly to the quality of community life.
Through their work, the volunteers not only improved the appearance of the cultural complex but also sent a powerful message: preserving cultural heritage is a shared responsibility. When communities come together to care for the places that matter most, the benefits continue long after the work is completed
